The Hound – Review

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Hound is a short story written as a last confession and suicide note, a common form for Lovecraft’s writings. I actually never read Lovecraft before this and was truly impressed with the language. I am someone who tends to remember the story or the characters and pay little attention to the style or word choice, but Lovecraft is a notable exception. The language is part of the story as much as the characters or the events. It sets the mood and tells us about the author of the confession. The word choice also underlines the other-worldliness of…

Sterile

The waiting room was sterile white and had an artificial lavender scent that was trying to mask the pungent smell of adhesives. The young, pretty receptionist was sitting at her desk, doing her best to ignore the waiting patient. Emily was sitting right in front of her and couldn’t help but notice that the receptionist was perfect, everything exactly where it should be. Her straightened raven hair reached just above her cheekbones, her red lips radiated against her porcelain skin, a silver heart necklace poured out of her smooth neckline, all the while her long fingers danced majestically over the…

The Big Book of Science Fiction Review

The Big Book of Science Fiction is an anthology of a century’s worth of sci-fi short stories. It is a large collection with 1216 pages! Before each short story, there is a short biography of the author, which sometimes helps frame the story you’re about to read. Considering that some of the stories were written in the early 1900’s, the framing helps explain why there are two moons on mars, for example. However, sometimes the biography is not very interesting. Too often there is a long list of the author’s publications, which doesn’t add much to the story ahead. So,…

Priestess

She stepped into the temple’s inner circle, where a seven sided star laid in the marble floor. In her hands, she carried a great bowl filled with five large gems. Tonight was the night between the Sun’s day and the Moon’s day, and this was an offering to the goddess honouring her role and sacrifice in creating this world. First, the priestess placed a red gem into a bowl at one of the short sides of the seven sided star. As soon as she placed the gem, the moonlight, coming in through the glass roof, hit it and fantastical images…

The Steppe

The wind was in his face, flaying is long dark hair. He saw a speck on the horizon, shining brightly against the raising hot air, and gave a glottal grunt. The horse picked up the pace. As he approached the strange hut, he slowed down to a light trot. Its broken contours and unnatural glow in the Sun made it look like the ancient ruins. He’d seen them himself when he was a child. When he first found it, he followed a falling star so bright it lit the night sky.  He was so close to it when it first…

Love comes in different shapes

The clock on the wall hits five o’clock. Finally, I get to go home. With a few courtesy goodbyes she quickly leaves the office, goes down in the elevator, and out into the fresh air of the street. The sky is dark and the wind cold. She shivers and hurries to her car. The parking lot is full and she can’t quite remember in which row she parked. Annoyed at the weather and herself, she goes up and down the parking lot repeatedly pressing the button on her car keys waiting for the car to respond. The red break lights flash…
